Job Description

A scientific society and publisher in central London is looking for a Commissioning Editor to develop and commission their list of journals in the area of biological sciences and to drive submissions and citations. This is a great opportunity for an experienced candidate to join a leading scientific organisation at an exciting time.

Key duties:

  • Develop and implement the editorial strategy and commissioning plans for a portfolio of journals
  • Prepare annual budget and business plans and ensure targets are met
  • Identify new opportunities and keep up-to-date with new market trends and competition
  • Invite and secure excellent review contributions to the research titles
  • Oversee editorial workflow providing support to academic editors and improving processes
  • Build and maintain strong relationships through networking and frequent travelling


Experience / skills required:

  • Educated to degree level (ideally Masters or PhD) in a scientific field or equivalent
  • Solid experience of editorial development within STM publishing is essential
  • Commercial acumen and an in depth knowledge of the scientific publishing market
  • Sound knowledge of publishing policy, procedures and practice
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to build relationships at all levels
  • Proactive and problem-solving attitude with a flexible approach and excellent customer service skills
  • Experience of working with editorial boards and a good team-player
  • Able to travel frequently nationally and internationally
